Read more In early February 2026, the quiet halls of the Mamprobi Polyclinic in Accra were transformed into a scene of desperation and outrage. What began as a routine postnatal recovery for a young mother ended in a parent’s worst nightmare: the brazen theft of her four-day-old son. The incident has since triggered a national conversation about hospital security, the vulnerability of new mothers, and the power of community vigilance. The Disappearance: A Calculated Breach On Tuesday,  February 17, 2026 , Precious Ankomah, who was recovering from a cesarean section, was resting in the postnatal ward. According to police reports, a woman—now identified as 33-year-old Latifa Salifu—allegedly entered the ward disguised in a peach-colored nurse’s uniform. Exploiting the mother's state of exhaustion and the ward’s security gaps, the suspect claimed she needed to take the infant for "routine medication." The payment, which arrived ahead of an August 9 deadline, has temporarily averted the threat of eviction and deportation for the students. The crisis began after the  Ghana Scholarship Secretariat (GSS) , which sponsors the students, fell behind on payments, leaving the university owed a total of $3.6 million. With the recent payment, an outstanding balance of $2.2 million remains. Many of the affected students are enrolled in critical programs, including science, engineering, and business. Before the payment, the university had warned that students could lose their scholarships, housing, and legal residency if the debt was not settled. GSS Registrar  Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei  acknowledged that delays were caused by an ongoing audit but reassured students t...

Traffic Snarl on Accra-Kumasi Highway as Low-Bed Truck Breaks Down

DUAMPOMPOM, GHANA —Commuters on the bustling Accra-Kumasi highway faced significant delays today after a low-bed truck carrying a large excavator broke down at Duampompom, near the Anum Apapam junction. The incident, which occurred early this morning, caused a massive traffic jam, stretching for several kilometers in both directions. According to eyewitnesses, the truck suffered a mechanical failure, rendering it immobile and blocking a significant portion of the road. With the large excavator on board, the vehicle created a major obstacle, making it difficult for other motorists to navigate the already busy highway. Police and officials from the Ghana Highway Authority were quickly dispatched to the scene to manage the traffic flow and work on removing the broken-down vehicle. They have been directing traffic and are attempting to clear the road to restore normal traffic flow. However, the sheer size and weight of the truck and its cargo have made the operation challenging. Motorists ...
