Evelyn is a smart and an industrious young lady who aims at taking the Fugu products (traditional fabric) to a different height. She is a professional  teacher with a master's Degree in TESL.Again,she is a married woman but that has  never been a hindrance to her dreams of becoming a successful entepreneur.



WHAT IS E&M FUUGU DESIGNS ALL ABOUT?

E n M Fuugu Designs is into the weaving ,sewing and sale of fuugu fabric (local fabric). They are based in Bawku in the Upper East Region of Ghana.  Currently, they are  into empowering young girls who have been enrolled into a training programme where interested young girls and women are trained on the  weaving of the traditional wear.The  Fuugu fabric is used for the weaving of traditional African cloths like the male smocks popularly  known as the batakari , ladies dresses ,bags, shoes and others. In Northern Ghana, the smock is the number one most valued wear. It is used in all the traditions in that part of the world. Smock is currently been adopted by people in the Southern part of Ghana. It is also highly sort after by the international market because of its tested quality.


WHEN DID E&M FUUGU DESIGNS START AND HOW IS IT GOING?

Speaking to Madam Evelyn on how she started, she said "I started with the sale of just fabrics in 2014, and run the business from  home because by then i could not afford a store to keep the products,in 2018 I was able to aquire a store so we were privileged to have a show room. In 2019 when there was a growing need for the product, we had to go into full time production (weaving),now how was I going to produce more? I started creating adverts and talking to young girls who were interested in learning the trade so we could increase production and also give them a sustainable job after the training.For us mainly,it was a way of empowering them because after the entire training process each girl was going to be awarded a certificate from NVTI.So for a start sixteen girls and young mothers were enrolled and proudly five young girls from my outfit have successfully graduated and shall be serving as trainer of trainers,this has been one of our success story."



ADVANTAGES OF THE SMOCK WEAR .

The traditional smock wear has many advantages and that is why it is been cherished by many individuals. Some of the advantages include:


(1) Durability: The material is one of the most durable materials in the world. In some families, smocks are being transferred from generation to generation. At least it can last for about sixty years or more.

(2) It is good for cold weather. Because of its strength and size, it is favourable for cold weather conditions.

(3) It covers the body well. Smock covers the body parts which two other shirts cannot cover.

(4) It is unique. The material is a very unique one that is not commonly found on the world market.

(5) It can be used for aesthetic purpose. Due to its unique nature, some people use them for aesthetic purpose.
