THE PEOPLE OF KUSAUG STAND UNITED AGAINST DIVISIVE RHETORIC AND DECEPTION

Recent remarks made by Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, running mate to Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia, represent a clear and dangerous attempt to sow discord within Kusaug. In a viral video, Napo falsely accuses H.E. John Dramani Mahama of plotting to divide the Kusasi and Mamprusi people, along with other tribes, should he return to office. These baseless claims are not only deceptive and irresponsible, but they also have the potential to inflame tensions and destabilize the peace we are striving to maintain in the area. Such reckless rhetoric must be unequivocally condemned.

The people of Kusaug have closely followed the commitments of various political leaders regarding our area’s future. At no point has John Dramani Mahama ever sought to divide the Kusasi and Mamprusi people. During his visit to the Zugraan Bawku Naaba’s palace, Mahama responded to a request by the chiefs and people of Kusaug by highlighting the potential creation of a Kusaug Region. He described it as a viable path toward resolving longstanding chieftaincy conflicts and promoting development. Mahama also emphasized the importance of a Commission of Enquiry to explore this request further, which could enhance security and bring about lasting peace in Bawku.

Earlier, Alhaji Mahamud Bawumia, during his campaign tour, also promised to honor the Zugraan’s request to create a Kusaug Region if elected. It is therefore baffling and disingenuous that NPP members, including Napo, now pretend to be unaware of their own flagbearer’s commitment to this cause.

Why are Napo and other NPP leaders deliberately attempting to mislead the people? Why are they sowing division where none exists? Your guess is as good as mine.

This is not the first time Napo has made loose and inflammatory statements. It seems clear that he is more concerned with stoking fear and confusion than telling the truth. We demand an immediate and public apology from him for his reckless comments. Such a statement is dangerous, particularly in an area where unity is critical for peace and development.

It is also revealing that Boniface Gambila, Ghana’s Ambassador to Burkina Faso and a representative of the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration, has also earlier criticized John Dramani Mahama’s response to honor the request for a creation of the Kusaug Region. It is important to remind Ambassador Gambila and others that the creation of a new region is not about division; it is about empowering the people of Kusaug and addressing the real challenges they face. This initiative would foster economic growth, improve infrastructure, and enhance security for all ethnic groups in the region—including Kusasis, Mamprusis, Bisas, Moshies, Yanga, Bimoba, Hausa, Fulbe, and many others.

All well-meaning citizens, regardless of political affiliation, must reject these dangerous narratives. The creation of a Kusaug Region is a legitimate request made by the people and endorsed by both leading candidates. However, it is now clear which of the two is truly committed to honoring their pledge. The focus must remain on fixing the broken economy and bettering the lives of Ghanaians, not on propagating falsehoods designed to divide us.
