WATCH ISRAELI DEFENCE FORCES KILLED YAHYA SINWAR (HAMAS LEADER)

Yahya Ibrahim Hassan Sinwar was a Palestinian militant and politician who held the position of de facto leader of Hamas. He chaired the Hamas Political Bureau from August 2024 and led the organization in the Gaza Strip from February 2017 until his death, succeeding Ismail Haniyeh.

For over a year, Israeli forces had been searching for Sinwar, who vanished in Gaza shortly after orchestrating the October 7 attacks. Reports indicated that he spent much of his time in the tunnels beneath the Gaza Strip, accompanied by a small group of bodyguards and hostages taken from Israel.

Ultimately, Sinwar's life ended in an unexpected encounter with an Israeli patrol in southern Gaza. His protective detail was minimal, and no hostages were present.

Here's what we know about the circumstances surrounding Sinwar's death:

On Wednesday, Israeli troops from the 828th Bislamach Brigade were conducting routine patrols in the Tal al-Sultan area of Rafah when they engaged three militants. The firefight appeared unremarkable at the time, and the soldiers did not return until Thursday morning, when they discovered a body resembling Sinwar's. Due to potential booby traps, they initially left the body in place, retrieving only a part of a finger for identification.

Later that day, after ensuring the area was secure, Sinwar's body was recovered and transported to Israel. IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari stated that the troops were unaware of Sinwar's presence during the operation but continued their engagement with the militants.

According to reports, Sinwar attempted to evade capture by running into a building, where he was subsequently targeted by a drone. His small group of bodyguards suggested he might have been trying to avoid detection or had lost many of his protectors.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant remarked that Sinwar died not as a commander but as a desperate figure trying to escape, sending a message to Israel's adversaries.

Drone footage released by the Israeli military depicted Sinwar's last moments, showing him injured and attempting to throw an object at the drone before the video cut out.

Initially, Israel announced it was investigating the possibility of Sinwar's death. As images circulated on social media showing a man with severe head injuries, officials warned that the identities of the deceased militants could not be confirmed right away. However, soon after, sources indicated increasing confidence that Sinwar had indeed been killed, a conclusion confirmed later that evening.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that this represented a significant blow to "evil," although he emphasized that the conflict in Gaza was far from over.

Sinwar had been on the run for more than a year, and Israeli forces had been gradually closing in on him, particularly as they eliminated other Hamas leaders and dismantled the infrastructure he relied upon since the October 7 attacks. The IDF confirmed that their recent operations had restricted Sinwar's movement, leading to his elimination.

While Sinwar's death marked a crucial achievement for Israel, the broader conflict continues. Netanyahu reassured families of hostages that efforts would persist until all captives were returned home, highlighting the ongoing struggle in Gaza. Families of the hostages expressed hope for a potential ceasefire to facilitate their loved ones' return.
