Wayne Rooney's brief tenure as Plymouth Argyle manager has come to an end after only seven months. The former England international struggled to alleviate the team's relegation concerns, with the club remaining stuck at the bottom of the Championship standings. Despite a three-year contract signed in May 2024, Rooney was dismissed after a series of disappointing results and poor performances, including a heavy 2-0 loss to fellow relegation candidates Oxford United on Sunday. This followed a string of damaging defeats to teams such as Coventry City, Bristol City, and Norwich City.
Under Rooney’s leadership, the Pilgrims secured just 18 points from 23 matches, and their last victory came on November 5, when they triumphed over Portsmouth. The club is still without a win away from home this season. Rooney’s managerial record at Plymouth ended with just 25 matches in charge.
Before joining Plymouth, Rooney's time as Birmingham City head coach was similarly short-lived. He was dismissed in January 2024 after winning only twice in 15 games.
In the wake of Rooney's departure, assistant coach Mike Phelan and coach Simon Ireland will also leave the club. Kevin Nancekivell, who was part of the coaching staff, will now assume interim charge for Plymouth’s upcoming match against Bristol City on New Year’s Day.
In a statement following his dismissal, Rooney thanked Plymouth Argyle’s board, staff, players, and fans for their support during his tenure. He expressed special gratitude to the coaching staff for their dedication and help, and noted that Plymouth Argyle would always have a special place in his heart. He also acknowledged the Green Army for making matches at Home Park memorable.
"I would like to take this opportunity to thank the board of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, in particular Simon Hallett and Neil Dewsnip who I shared great relationships with," Rooney said. "Thanks also to all the staff who made me feel welcome and who make the club such a special place, the players and fans for their efforts and support during my time as head coach and I wish them all the best for the future. To the Green Army, thanks for making the games at Home Park so special, they are memories that we will share forever."
He also praised his coaching staff, including Kevin Nancekivell, Simon Ireland, Darryl Flahavan, and Mike Phelan, for their knowledge, dedication, and support. "I will continue to look out for and take interest in their results," Rooney added.
