National Security Operatives Detain Nine in Connection with Disappearance of ECG Containers at Tema Port

A significant operation by Ghana's National Security has resulted in the arrest of nine individuals, comprising eight Chinese nationals and one Ghanaian, in connection with the alleged disappearance of containers belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) from the Tema Port. The arrests follow a detailed investigation triggered by the discovery of cables, believed to be part of the missing consignment, at an aluminum smelter located in Shai Hills.

The operation, which spanned several days, was initiated after ECG officials reported the discrepancy in their inventory. The missing containers, reportedly containing valuable electrical cables and equipment, raised immediate concerns regarding potential large-scale theft and organized criminal activity. National Security operatives, leveraging advanced tracking and investigative techniques, were able to trace the missing cables to the aluminum smelter, reportedly owned and operated by the Chinese nationals now in custody.

Sources familiar with the investigation suggest that the smelter had been under surveillance due to suspicions of illicit activities. The recovery of the ECG cables at the facility has solidified these suspicions, leading to the immediate apprehension of the individuals involved. The Ghanaian national arrested is believed to have played a crucial role in facilitating the movement and handling of the stolen goods.

The investigation is currently focused on determining the precise quantity of missing containers, the total value of the stolen items, and the duration of the alleged criminal operation. Authorities are also working to establish whether this incident is part of a larger network of organized crime operating within the port and related industries.

"This arrest underscores our commitment to safeguarding critical national assets and ensuring the integrity of our ports," stated a spokesperson from National Security, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the ongoing investigation. "We are determined to uncover the full extent of this operation and bring all those involved to justice."

The incident has raised concerns about security protocols at the Tema Port and the effectiveness of current monitoring systems. Officials from the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) have been called upon to cooperate with the investigation and review existing security measures to prevent future occurrences.

The arrested individuals are currently being held for questioning, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses. The case has been transferred to the appropriate legal authorities for prosecution. The public is awaiting further information regarding the case, and many hope that this will lead to a strengthening of security at the port.
