Ukraine, US to hold talks on Russia-Ukraine war in Saudi Arabia next week

Negotiations and Escalation: Ukraine, US, and Russia Amidst Conflict

Amidst a backdrop of escalating conflict, Ukraine and the United States have announced plans to convene in Saudi Arabia to explore a framework for ending the ongoing war with Russia. This meeting comes as Russia launched a significant drone and missile attack targeting Ukrainian energy and gas infrastructure.

The Russian assault followed the United States' decision to suspend military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine, a move that occurred after a period of heightened tension between US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Zelenskyy confirmed his intention to travel to Saudi Arabia on Monday for discussions with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, followed by bilateral talks with US envoy Steve Witkoff. Witkoff indicated that the agenda would include discussions on an "initial ceasefire" and a "framework" for a more comprehensive agreement. The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the talks would take place in Jeddah.

This meeting marks the first high-level engagement between US and Ukrainian officials since a contentious meeting between Zelenskyy and Trump on February 28th, which concluded with heightened tensions.

Despite the prior friction, Trump stated that he had received a letter from Zelenskyy, expressing Ukraine’s readiness to engage in negotiations.

Statements on Negotiation and Conflict

Trump, speaking to reporters, expressed his belief that "a lot of progress" had been made in recent days regarding Ukraine and Russia, though he did not provide specifics. He asserted that both Ukraine and Russia were inclined to reach a deal, stating, "Ukraine wants to make a deal because I don’t think they have a choice," and similarly, "Russia wants to make a deal because…they have no choice either."

Witkoff acknowledged Zelenskyy's recent expressions of apology and gratitude following the prior disagreement. He also addressed the proposed deal granting the US access to Ukrainian mineral resources, stating, "We’ll see if he follows through." This proposed agreement is viewed by some analysts as an attempt by Ukraine to secure US support amid tensions related to US outreach to Russia.

The Trump administration has emphasized the potential of this economic pact to strengthen US-Ukraine ties and deter future Russian aggression. The agreement would provide the US with access to Ukraine's rare earth deposits, potentially benefiting US aerospace, electric vehicle, and medical manufacturing sectors.

Escalation of Russian Attacks

In Ukraine, the air force reported that Russia launched numerous missiles and drones, causing damage to energy facilities across the country. Regional officials confirmed damage to infrastructure and reported injuries.

In response to the attacks, Zelenskyy reiterated his call for a truce, focusing on air and sea operations, while stating "The first steps to establishing real peace should be forcing the sole source of this war, Russia, to stop such attacks."

The recent Russian attacks, occurring after the US suspension of aid, represent a significant escalation. Al Jazeera’s Assed Baig reported from Kyiv that the US withdrawal of support could facilitate further Russian advances, stating that the loss of intelligence sharing "could enable Russia to make more gains."
