Traffic Snarl on Accra-Kumasi Highway as Low-Bed Truck Breaks Down

Kumasi, Ashanti Region, Ghana – Students seeking accommodation at the University of Ghana's highly sought-after Pent Hostel are facing a significant financial burden with the release of the newly approved rates for the 2025/2026 academic year. A document from Ghana Hostel Limited (GHL) management, dated July 10, 2025, reveals substantial price hikes across various room types, most notably for the 1-in-a-Room with AC option.
Previously priced at GH₵27,769, the 1-in-a-Room with AC at New Pent will now cost national students a steep GH₵40,329. This represents a considerable increase that is likely to impact many students' accommodation choices and overall living expenses.
The new rates, as detailed in the GHL document, show the following for national students at the Legon Facility:
New Pent:
1 In A Room Wit AC: GH₵40,329.00 (Ensuite)
1 In A Room Without AC: GH₵24,835.00 (Ensuite)
2 In 1 Room With AC: GH₵21,426.00 (Ensuite)
2 In 1 Room Without AC: GH₵17,247.00 (Ensuite)
4 In 1 Room: GH₵8,976.00 (Ensuite)
Old Pent:
2 In 1 Room Without AC: GH₵14,363.00 (Shared)
4 In 1 Room: GH₵7,492.00 (Shared)
International students are also facing increased rates, with the 1 In A Room With AC at New Pent now set at GH₵49,500.00.
The document notes that "HOSTEL FEES INCLUDES: Utilities (Water/ECG/Stand-by Plant), Software management fee, and JCR Dues."
This significant increase in hostel fees is expected to spark discussions among the student body and potentially lead to calls for clarification or intervention from student representative councils. As the academic year approaches, students and their families will need to factor these new accommodation costs into their financial planning.
