Taxi Driver Sentenced to 12 Years for Defilement of Minor

Accra, Ghana – A taxi driver, Francis Ammisah, 39, has been handed a 12-year prison sentence by the Dansoman Circuit Court for defiling a 14-year-old girl. Ammisah was found guilty after allegedly luring the minor with a spiked drink before assaulting her.

Ammisah had initially pleaded not guilty to the defilement charge when he first appeared in court in 2023. However, the court, presided over by Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, ultimately found him culpable.

Details of the Case

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder, the victim frequently spent weekends with a complainant in Lapaz. On October 28, 2023, the victim awoke feeling unwell and struggled to sit up. When questioned by the complainant, the girl disclosed that Ammisah had been repeatedly taking her to a location in Mataheko. There, he would mix a white substance into a bottle of Coca-Cola, give it to her to drink, and then engage in sexual acts with her.

Chief Inspector Wonder further revealed that after each assault, Ammisah would give the victim GH¢2.00 and threaten her with death if she revealed what had happened to anyone.

A report was filed with the Odorkor Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit, leading to Ammisah's arrest. During questioning, he denied having sexual intercourse with the victim. A police medical form was issued for the victim's examination, and a medical report, endorsed by a doctor, was subsequently provided to the court. Following the investigation, Ammisah was formally charged and brought before the court.
