AGONA AMENFI — A community celebration turned into a scene of high anxiety on Friday when a tense standoff between local police and an armed suspect ended with gunfire, shattering the peace of the Agona Amenfi Chief’s Palace in the Amenfi Central District.
The incident unfolded during what was supposed to be a milestone event for the community—a sod-cutting ceremony attended by traditional authorities to mark the construction of a new maternity ward for the town’s health centre.
The atmosphere shifted when organizers realized that the ceremonial hoe needed to officially break ground had been left behind. A palace subject was immediately sent back to the palace grounds to retrieve it.
Upon reaching the palace, the messenger encountered an individual blocking the entrance. Local sources identified the suspect as a native and royal of Agona Amenfi, who was conspicuously dressed in a traditional smock adorned with talismans. A confrontation ensued, with the suspect reportedly brandishing a machete and preventing entry.
The situation escalated rapidly, prompting an urgent emergency response from the local police.
Driven by local rumors that the suspect possessed traditional charms making him immune to bullets, a large crowd of residents gathered at a safe distance to watch.
Video footage from the scene captures the intense final moments of the encounter. Heavily armed police officers can be seen confronting the armed man within the palace courtyard as he refused orders to surrender his weapon.
What the Footage Shows: Contrary to some early chaotic reports of a physical assault, video evidence shows the standoff reaching a climax when an officer fires a targeted shot, striking the suspect in the hand. Disarmed by the force of the shot, the suspect immediately succumbs to the pain, ending his resistance and allowing officers to safely close in and apprehend him.
The wounded suspect was taken into custody and transported to a medical facility for treatment.
While the Ghana Police Service has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the motive behind the palace blockade, a full investigation is expected. The violent episode has left the Agona Amenfi community deeply unsettled, with many expressing shock over such a volatile confrontation taking place at the Chief’s Palace—a site traditionally revered as a symbol of peace and authority
