TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — Tensions between Iran and the United States have escalated sharply following a sequence of military preparations, public warnings, and high-stakes diplomatic interventions from Gulf Arab leaders.

Iran's military leadership has announced that its forces are fully prepared for a direct confrontation, responding to a heavily publicized U.S. plan to launch a large-scale military operation. Speaking through the state-aligned ISNA news agency, Iranian Army spokesperson Mohammad Akraminia stated that any fresh aggression by the United States would prompt Tehran to "open new fronts" using updated tactical methods and military equipment. Iranian commanders added that recent domestic military drills demonstrate a high state of readiness to counter external threats at any location.

A Placed Assault and a Gulf Intervention

The warning from Tehran follows an abrupt announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump, who confirmed that a major military assault against Iran—originally scheduled to commence on Tuesday—had been placed "on hold."

According to the White House, the decision to suspend the strike was made following direct communication from regional leaders, including the Emir of Qatar, the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, and the President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). These leaders reportedly interceded to advocate for a diplomatic window, assuring Washington that a negotiated settlement with Tehran remains a viable option.

However, the suspension remains highly contingent. President Trump cautioned that U.S. forces remain primed for a large-scale offensive at a moment's notice, stating publicly that "the clock is ticking" for Iranian negotiators to comply with international demands.

Diplomatic Deadlock Over Core Demands

Despite a fragile, intermittent ceasefire that has periodically limited direct combat since the wider conflict began on February 28, formal peace negotiations have reached a strict impasse. Both nations remain dug into conflicting diplomatic positions:

  • United States Prerequisites: Washington's current framework demands that Iran surrender 400 kilograms of enriched uranium, restrict all nuclear activities to a single designated facility, accept the continued freezing of its overseas financial assets, and formally waive any claims to wartime financial compensation.

  • Iranian Objections: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei has publicly rejected these terms, labeling them "excessive" and "unreasonable demands" that infringe upon national sovereignty. Tehran maintains that any permanent peace agreement is contingent upon immediate sanctions relief, the release of frozen financial assets, and a cessation of U.S. regional military operations.

Global Implications

The ongoing standoff continues to exert severe pressure on the global economy. International shipping and energy sectors remain highly vulnerable to the friction, particularly concerning transit stability through the critical maritime corridor of the Strait of Hormuz.

As diplomatic channels remain strained, regional intermediaries continue to urge both Washington and Tehran to avoid a miscalculation that could trigger a broader, unrestricted conflict.
