Ashanti South: Police Arrest Car-Snatching Leader; 2 Gang Members Killed in Shootout

KUMASI — In a major breakthrough against violent crime networks, the Ashanti South Regional Police Command has dismantled a notorious criminal syndicate in an intense, intelligence-led operation. The high-stakes mission resulted in the arrest of a prominent car-snatching kingpin, the deaths of two armed gang members during a fierce gun battle, and the recovery of high-powered assault weapons.

Coordinated Raid Turns Fatal

According to detailed briefings from the Regional Command led by DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, the police operation was initially launched to track a dangerous robbery network operating along volatile transit paths, including the Obuasi–Manso Nyinahin stretch.

Acting on actionable intelligence, officers successfully tracked down and arrested the alleged leader of the syndicate. The arrest quickly uncovered deeper operations, leading police units to a secluded, bushy location where the gang had buried a hidden cache of heavy weaponry.

However, the recovery mission took a deadly turn when armed gang members ambushed the police unit in an attempt to free their leader and protect their armory.

"It was a volatile situation. Our officers were heavily fired upon, forcing them to engage in a tactical exchange of gunfire to repel the ambush," authorities stated.

During the intense shootout, two suspected gang members were fatally shotA brave police officer also sustained injuries during the gun battle and was rushed to the hospital, where he is currently in stable condition and responding to treatment.

Massive Cache of Weapons Recovered

Following the gunfight, police successfully swept the area and retrieved the hidden armory. The recovered items include:

  • Military-grade assault rifle

  • Multiple rounds of live ammunition

  • Specialized tracking devices and forged vehicle documentation used by the network to bypass security checkpoints.

Dismantling the Vehicle Theft Network

The arrested syndicate leader is believed to head a highly sophisticated car-snatching and highway robbery network. This gang specifically targeted high-value commercial and private vehicles, such as Toyota Hilux pickup trucks, frequently resorting to extreme violence to overpower drivers on major highways

Once stolen, the vehicles were retrofitted, assigned forged papers, and quickly moved across regional lines or borders for resale.

Police Reassure the Public

DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba praised the bravery of the tactical units and reiterated the Ghana Police Service's unwavering commitment to making the region hostile for criminals. Security patrols have been heavily intensified along the major transit corridors to ensure the safety of travelers and motorists.

A manhunt is currently underway to track down the remaining fleeing members of the network. The police have urged residents, particularly those around Kumasi and the Obuasi-Manso enclave, to report any individuals seeking medical treatment for unexplained gunshot wounds.
