POLICE REMAND ISRAEL SAFO, TWO ASSOCIATES FOLLOWING WEAPONS CACHE DISCOVERY IN KWABENYA

ACCRA — The Accra Central District Court has remanded Israel Kwadwo Safo, also known as Akofena, along with two of his associates, into police custody following their arrest over a violent shooting incident in Kwabenya.

The suspects have been charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to commit a crime, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and possession of military accoutrements.

The Kwabenya Confrontation

The arrests stem from a violent confrontation on June 21, 2026, at a family residence in Kwabenya. According to police reports, former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo, was denied entry to the property during a family event. The situation escalated when private security guards stationed at the premises allegedly discharged firearms.

The former lawmaker sustained injuries during the fracas, and her vehicle was significantly damaged by gunfire. Police personnel dispatched to the scene immediately arrested six private security guards to restore order.

Weapon Seizures and Additional Arrests

Following the initial disturbance, Israel Kwadwo Safo surrendered to the police on June 22, 2026. A subsequent search conducted by the Ghana Police Service on his vehicle and residence led to the retrieval of a substantial cache of weapons.

Items seized by law enforcement include:

  • Two Glock pistols

  • Over 180 rounds of assorted live ammunition

  • Military-grade tactical gear and accoutrements

Two other individuals identified as associates—Nana Kwaku Afriyie and Kwadwo Safo Koomson—were also taken into custody, bringing the total number of detained individuals to nine.

Ministry Action on Security License

In a concurrent administrative development, the Ministry of the Interior has announced the immediate suspension of the operational license of Kantanka Security Services. State officials cited the unauthorized use of lethal firearms by the agency's personnel during the June 21 dispute as the primary ground for the regulatory sanction.

The prosecution informed the court that investigations are still active as forensics teams analyze the retrieved ballistic evidence. The defense team's application for bail was denied, and the court has adjourned the case to July 7, 2026, pending further police investigations.
