KUWAIT CITY — Kuwait International Airport’s Terminal 1 (T1) sustained severe structural damage and multiple civilian casualties early Wednesday morning following a direct drone and missile strike launched by Iranian forces. The attack marks a dangerous escalation in regional hostilities, bringing commercial aviation to a standstill in the Gulf state.

Brigadier General Saud Abdulaziz Al-Otaibi, spokesperson for the Kuwaiti Ministry of Defense, confirmed that a volley of hostile unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) targeted the primary passenger terminal. First responders and emergency medical teams deployed immediately to the scene, transporting several wounded civilians to nearby medical facilities.

In response to the strike, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation activated its comprehensive emergency response protocol. All commercial flight operations at Kuwait International Airport have been suspended until further notice. Incoming flights are being rerouted to alternative airfields across neighboring states, while technical and security teams assess the extent of the infrastructure and system damage.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed responsibility for the assault shortly after detonation. Iranian state media indicated the strike was a direct retaliation for a U.S. military operation executed on Tuesday night, during which American forces targeted an Iranian military installation on Qeshm Island. Tehran alleged that the Kuwaiti facility was targeted due to its proximity to regional U.S. military assets.

The Kuwaiti Armed Forces have raised their combat readiness to full alert status. In an official statement, the Ministry of Defense condemned the strike as a blatant violation of national sovereignty and international law, adding that defensive measures are actively being synchronized to secure the country’s airspace.
