ACCRA, GHANA — In the wake of a torrential downpour that has ground activities in the nation's capital to a halt, the Minister for the Interior, Hon. Mubarak Mohammed-Mubarak, has issued an urgent public safety appeal urging residents to remain indoors if they have not yet set out for their destinations.

The directive, broadcasted by JoyNews on June 29, 2026, emphasizes the escalating danger posed by the worsening flash floods across major metropolitan roads 



Severe Gridlock and Submerged Roadways

Hours of continuous rainfall have completely overwhelmed local drainage networks, turning primary commuting routes into treacherous waterways. The dense cluster of commercial mini-buses (trotros), heavy-duty pickup trucks, and smaller saloon cars trapped in deep floodwaters

Many drivers have been left stranded mid-journey, while others are forced to park on higher ground as roads become entirely impassable. The current situation poses a severe risk to both vehicular safety and pedestrians trying to wade through the rapid currents.

Emergency Safety Directives

With emergency response teams and the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) monitoring high-risk zones, the Ministry of the Interior has reiterated that preventing further movement on the roads is paramount to avoiding casualties.

The official directive outlines the following protocols for residents:

  • Shelter in Place: If you are currently at home or in a secure indoor environment, do not attempt to leave until water levels recede.

  • Avoid Driving Through Floodwaters: Rising water can stall vehicle engines and wash away cars; do not test the depth of heavily flooded intersections.

The government has assured the public that emergency service personnel are actively working to assist stranded individuals and clear critical drainage blockages to alleviate the water buildup as quickly as possible
