MILITARY CRISIS ESCALATES IN PERSIAN GULF FOLLOWING ROUNDS OF AIR STRIKES ACROSS IRAN

TEHRAN / WASHINGTON — The military standoff between the United States and Iran has escalated sharply into open conflict following extensive waves of airstrikes targeting multiple strategic installations across southern Iran. The strikes follow a breakdown in maritime security in the region, marking the most severe direct confrontation between the two nations in years.

Strategic Infrastructure Struck

According to reports from regional media and local authorities, multiple blasts targeted coastal defense and naval positions late Thursday night into early Friday morning.

The primary strikes focused heavily on infrastructure surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global choke point for energy transit:

  • Bushehr & Choghadak: Authorities confirmed two large explosions near Bushehr, where a projectile reportedly impacted a military facility on the outskirts of the city. While the site is home to Iran’s primary nuclear power plant, local officials stated that the facility itself sustained no damage and remains secure.

  • The Southern Coast: Naval installations in the strategic port city of Bandar Abbas, Sirik, and Konarak were repeatedly hit by aerial bombardments.

  • Gulf Islands: Further overnight detonations were recorded across Qeshm Island and Abu Musa Island, which house active coastal missile positions.

Maritime Flashpoint Triggered

The current crisis follows a sudden spike in maritime violence earlier this week. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the multi-wave operation was launched in response to attacks on three commercial cargo vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

A central aim of the strikes, according to defense officials, is to degrade Iran's capability to intercept civilian shipping and threaten freedom of navigation in international waters. Concurrently, the US Treasury Department announced the immediate revocation of temporary sanctions waivers that had previously permitted specific Iranian oil exports.

Region-Wide Retaliation

The confrontation has rapidly expanded beyond Iran's borders. In retaliation for the coastal strikes, Iranian forces launched coordinated drone and missile salvos targeting US and allied military infrastructure across the Middle East.

Air defense systems were active through the night in Kuwait, Jordan, and Bahrain—the headquarters of the US Navy’s 5th Fleet—as intercepts were carried out over international airspace.

Local defense and emergency personnel across southern Iran are currently assessing the full scale of structural damage and casualties resulting from the strikes. Maritime traffic through the Persian Gulf remains on high alert as international shipping lines reroute vessels to avoid the active combat corridor.
