A highly coordinated operation by Ghana's National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) and the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC) has resulted in the seizure of a staggering 3.3 tonnes of cocaine, destined for Accra, in a major blow to drug trafficking networks operating within the country. The substantial consignment was intercepted at Pedu Junction, near Cape Coast, on March 4, 2025, following meticulous intelligence gathering and strategic planning.

The illicit cargo was ingeniously concealed beneath a layer of sand in a tipper truck originating from Takoradi, a known transit point for various goods. The meticulous concealment was intended to evade detection, but the joint task force, acting on credible intelligence, successfully intercepted the vehicle.

Upon initial inspection, a significant quantity of cocaine was discovered. Subsequent, more thorough searches of the truck revealed additional concealed sacks, ultimately pushing the total weight of the seized narcotics to a monumental 3,319.68 kilograms. This substantial seizure underscores the scale of drug trafficking operations that authorities are confronting.

Two suspects, believed to be key figures in the transportation and distribution of the cocaine, have been apprehended and remanded in custody. Law enforcement agencies are actively pursuing further leads, with investigations ongoing to identify and apprehend other individuals involved in this extensive criminal network.

The street value of the confiscated cocaine is estimated to exceed $350 million, highlighting the lucrative nature of the illegal drug trade and the significant financial impact of this seizure. This substantial financial blow is expected to disrupt the operations of the involved drug cartel and send a strong message to other criminal organizations.

"This successful operation demonstrates the effectiveness of inter-agency collaboration and our unwavering commitment to combating drug trafficking," stated a high-ranking official from NACOC, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation. "We are determined to dismantle these criminal networks and protect our communities from the devastating effects of drug abuse."

The investigation is now focused on tracing the origin of the cocaine, identifying the intended recipients, and uncovering the full extent of the drug trafficking network. Authorities are also examining potential links to international drug cartels, as the sheer volume of the seized narcotics suggests a sophisticated and well-organized operation.

The successful interception of this massive cocaine consignment represents a significant victory for Ghana's law enforcement agencies and underscores their dedication to safeguarding the nation from the scourge of drug trafficking. The public is awaiting further updates as the investigation progresses and more details emerge.
