Attorney-General Orders Probe into NDC's Yamin and Abanga Over Galamsey Allegations

ACCRA, Ghana – July 15, 2025 – The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice has directed the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to launch a full-scale investigation into Joseph Yamin, the National Organizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Yakubu Abanga, the party's Third Vice Chairman, concerning allegations of involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as 'galamsey'.

The directive also extends to "others found complicit" in the illicit mining activities, with specific reference to issues highlighted in the report authored by former Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Professor Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng, on illegal mining. Prof. Frimpong-Boateng's controversial report, submitted in 2021, implicated several individuals in the galamsey menace, drawing widespread public attention and calls for action.

While the specific allegations against Yamin and Abanga have not been publicly detailed by the Attorney-General's office, the reference to Prof. Frimpong-Boateng's report suggests that the probe will delve into the claims and narratives presented within that document.

Joseph Yamin currently serves as the NDC's National Organizer, a prominent position within the opposition party. Yakubu Abanga is the Third Vice Chairman of the NDC, also holding a significant leadership role. The directive for their investigation by EOCO, a body mandated to prevent and detect organized crime, underscores the seriousness with which the allegations are being treated.

This development signals a renewed focus on combating illegal mining, a practice that has caused significant environmental degradation and economic losses across Ghana. The Attorney-General's move is likely to be seen as a strong statement regarding accountability, regardless of political affiliation.

EOCO is expected to commence its investigations immediately, gathering evidence and interviewing relevant individuals to ascertain the veracity of the claims. The outcome of these investigations could have significant implications for the individuals involved and the broader fight against illegal mining in Ghana.
