WASSCE 2025: Over 461,000 Candidates Begin Written Exams

  Accra, Ghana 🇬🇭 – A total of  461,640 candidates  began the main written phase of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) on August 20, starting with the Oral English paper. The candidates, comprising  207,381 males  and  254,259 females , represent a slight increase of 1,029 from the 460,611 who wrote the exams last year. This year marks the fourth consecutive time Ghana is conducting the 'Ghana Only' WASSCE, a calendar introduced in 2021 in response to academic disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. While other member countries of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC)—Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—have since returned to the traditional May/June schedule, Ghana continues to operate on this modified calendar. President Mahama Grants Amnesty to 998 Prisoners

  In a move aligning with Article 72(1) of Ghana's Constitution, President John Dramani Mahama has granted amnesty to 998 prisoners. The decision, which follows recommendations from the Prisons Service Council and consultations with the Council of State, aims to provide a second chance to various inmates. The amnesty, effective immediately, benefits a wide range of individuals. The largest group of beneficiaries is 787 first-time offenders who have been granted full release. Additionally, 87 inmates who were on death row will now have their sentences commuted to life imprisonment, while 51 serving life sentences will have their terms reduced to 20 years. The compassionate aspect of the amnesty extends to 33 seriously ill prisoners and 36 inmates over the age of 70 who will also be released. The payment, which arrived ahead of an August 9 deadline, has temporarily averted the threat of eviction and deportation for the students.
