Venezuelan President Appears in U.S. Court After Arrest on Drug Charge

NEW YORK — Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has appeared before a United States federal court following his recent arrest and extradition, according to reports from international media outlets. Maduro was transported under heavy security to a federal courthouse in New York for an initial court appearance. The development marks a rare and significant moment in international criminal proceedings involving a sitting head of state. Six months after French President Emmanuel Macron announced his intention to remove his country's armed forces due to tensions with the ruling junta, the French military left Mali. 

Mali's transitional administration permitted Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group to deploy on its territory, which has increased tensions over the past year between Mali, its African neighbors, and the European Union. 

The last French soldiers from the so-called Barkhane force to be stationed in Mali walked into neighboring Niger on Monday afternoon, according to the French military. They had a base in Gao, which is in northern Mali and has a high rate of Islamist violence.
