Organized Labor Demands Nationwide Strike to Curb Illegal Mining

In a significant escalation of their demands to address the pervasive issue of illegal mining in Ghana, Organized Labor has announced a nationwide strike set to begin on Thursday, October 10, 2024. The labor unions are calling for a complete ban on all forms of small-scale mining.

The decision follows the expiration of a September 30 deadline given to the government to declare a state of emergency in response to the ongoing illegal mining activities, commonly referred to as "galamsey." Despite the deadline, the government failed to take the requested action, prompting Organized Labor to take a more assertive stance.

"Given the government's inaction on our demands to combat illegal mining, we have no choice but to declare a nationwide strike," stated a press release issued by the labor unions. "We urge all workers to stay home on October 10th until the government addresses our concerns."

The strike is being organized by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), the Forum for Labour and Employment Advancement, and the Ghana Federation of Labour.
